UNIT 6: GENETICS

hHaving learned about DNA and the role of meiosis in gametogenesis, students will study the interaction of genes and the relation to website genetics 2phenotypic variability.  Punnett squares will be used to learn and practice Mendelian genetics, calculating probability of traits in potential offspring.  Different patterns of inheritance will be examined including codominance, incomplete dominance, sex linked traits, multiple alleles and polygenic inheritance.  Students will also study mutations as the other source of genetic variation.  The inheritance of genetic disorders will be analyzed to study the relationship between heredity, phenotypes and mutations.  The understanding of heredity and causes of variation will give students the ability to predict the potential for inheritance of specific traits within a familial lineage.  Furthermore, students will be asked to build a connection between genetic variability and the mechanism of protein synthesis.
